Here are a few things to take into account:
Don't Get Lost in the Crowd
The larger the firm, the greater the likelihood that you might find yourself a little lost when you are just starting out. Learn what you can about a firm's culture before deciding to accept an offer. A company culture that encourages a team approach, in which you will have the opportunity to work closely with senior managers and partners, is often best. This will allow you to experience more positive interaction among your peers and begin building relationships with clients, all while reinforcing your opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience.
Emphasis on Communication
Make sure the firm understands the importance of internal and external communication. Open and effective dialogue is of critical importance not only with clients but also within the firm. Associate surveys are often very quick to point out the vital role of timely, frequent feedback in maintaining job satisfaction. An open-door policy is a great firm asset and is indicative of the value a firm places on associates' input.
Client Interaction
To help you develop professionally, the firm should let you interact with clients on a regular basis. During your first year, ask to work with clients on a diverse range of engagements to gain valuable experience. As you advance your career, make sure the firm provides you with the opportunity to work on larger, more in-depth engagements.
Business Attire
It may seem trivial, but dress code is important. Do you feel more comfortable in suits or casual attire? Many firms have recognized the transition that has occurred in business fashion and are encouraging professionals to wear business-casual attire while working in the office. Of course, professional business attire will generally still be expected when meeting with clients.
Make a Difference
While accounting services are often seen as a necessity, CPAs do help their clients solve complex financial and business problems that can substantially impact their clients' organizations, and often the community at large. Therefore, it's important that you find your work to be meaningful as well as challenging. For example, if you are passionate about working with public entities, confirm during the interview process that (1) the firm has a large client base of governmental clients and (2) you will have the opportunity to work on these engagements.
Community Involvement
If you consider community service to be an area of importance in your personal life, then you will want to make sure the firm you choose is also committed to making a difference in the local community. Many CPA firms have community service committees that organize volunteer opportunities, fundraisers, sporting leagues, and various office outings.
Flexibility
A work-life balance will be important in maintaining your overall satisfaction level. Does the firm encourage flexible scheduling that can accommodate family commitments? Will you have enough paid time off to recoup and rejuvenate?
Training Programs
Audit and tax regulations change constantly, so it's fundamental that you select a firm that recognizes the value of continuing professional education. Choose a firm that offers adequate training and educational opportunities designed to fit into your professional work schedule. And remember to take advantage of these training programs once you begin your career to allow yourself to develop specialized business knowledge and leadership skills you need to grow.
CPA Exam
Becoming a certified public accountant is an essential milestone in your accounting career, but passing the CPA exam is no easy task. CPA firms recognize this and should provide study materials to help you prepare for the exam. Also, many firms now offer a monetary bonus as an added incentive to help motivate associates to pass the exam. Remember: studies show that passing the exam becomes more difficult the further you get from your graduation date. As a result, many firms are now starting to offer associates a pre-employment option of attending a CPA exam "boot camp." Taking advantage of this sort of intensive training program can put you well on your way to passing the exam.
Choosing where to begin your accounting career will have a significant impact on your future. If you begin your job search by defining your professional development and personal growth goals, then you will be better equipped to make the right decision. Be sure to research CPA firms with these goals in mind, and this extra effort will pay off in long-term job satisfaction.
