The field of accounting is most definitely a competitive one and those looking to increase their chances of succeeding in the profession need a lot of help and support. Of course, those that may not have a significant network of contacts in the field will most definitely be at a disadvantage.

For those that may have recently graduated from college, such a problem is likely since a professional network would be very hard to develop when not actively working in the field. This is why it is so critical for those starting out in the accounting profession to look towards their alumni network as a potential source for a beginning position. Then again, you could also be seeking accounting employment on the executive level. Alumni networks are helpful in all stages of accounting careers. Again, that is why their value should never be underestimated.

Why is networking so valuable? One of the most oft cited reasons centers on the concept of the hidden job market. Now, the hidden job market is not something that was devised because anyone is hording jobs away from the general public. Rather, most companies seek to fill vacancies internally because external advertising comes with costs. Additionally, there is a great deal of time involved with posting public job announcement online or in print resources such as newspapers. Filling a position internally and without promotional costs is often the best solution for most accounting firms.

And how do you find your way into the hidden, unadvertised job market? This is where an alumni network becomes helpful since it will open the door to many of those accounting jobs. When you develop a close contact with an alumnus of your school, the individual can open doors for you in many ways. The most basic of way would be passing along a resume on your behalf. Of course, putting in an excellent word for you would also be a hugely positive step. Recommendations count and when a solid recommendation comes from a respected professional, the impact can be most beneficial. Such help has often launched many successful accounting careers which is why networking help should never be dismissed.

However, it is also important to be patient when asking for such networking help. Far too often, people will assume that the doors to accounting employment will be opened overnight. This is generally not the case and filling accounting jobs can take a little time even when a good recommendation is involved. As such, patience needs to be employed when networking as this would be the most prudent and beneficial path to take.

For those wondering how they can develop a strong relationship with an alumni network, the steps one can take to do this can vary as well. Attending alumni functions is an excellent way to make contacts since nothing can substitute meeting someone in person. Those unable to do so can always fall back on a very simple strategy: writing or emailing individuals in an alumni directory and asking for their advice, help, and support. Be polite in all your initial dealings because you want to make a good impression. This will greatly aid in your ability to procure accounting employment. Being desperate or overtly pestering people is not a good strategy for landing a job. Being patient and polite, however, may deliver the positive results that you are looking for.
