Human Resource Services invites applications for a
Financial Manager
to join their team. The
Financial Manager
is responsible for completing the compliance review of payroll transactions for completeness and accuracy. The total dollars passing through payroll in fiscal year 2022 was approximately $287 million in wages and employer paid benefits.
Essential duties assigned to this position include but are not limited to:
Enter off-cycle original transactions for wage and benefit processing;
Analyze and present possible corrections for transactional errors and enter those corrections when approved;
Work with departments to gather data and complete appropriate paperwork to align funding sources;
Work with the actual and statistical analysis of data to process payments for UM benefits such as health insurance, retirement, and various taxes;
Reconcile transactions initiated and processed by other employees and give instruction to employees on the correct process for the transaction;
Work with the Associate Director of Fiscal and Tax Compliance to correctly process and reconcile tax payments for various tax obligations such as foreign nationals, out of state employees, and split the pot (945) payments.
The person in this position will also be responsible for communicating effectively with affiliate campuses regarding payroll transactions and use report writing skills to create comprehensive explanatory reports for various constituents including unions, the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, campus departments, and external agencies.
Required Skills
Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and methods.
Demonstrated responsibility for complex, regulated, and time-sensitive functions.
Proven ability to use computer technology, web applications, and related software with the desire and ability to learn new software.
Demonstrated experience with a database report writing tool such as SQL or Access.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse array of individuals both within, and external too, the university.
Advanced oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation communication skills.
Demonstrated experience with project management – analyzing, planning, team building, execution and tracking, monitoring, and follow through.
Demonstrated ability to understand and utilize the concepts of accounting in the processing of payroll transactions – taxation, voluntary and involuntary deductions, pre-tax and post-tax deductions, clearing accounts, and accounts payable.
Demonstrated ability to be an effective team player, to listen and share information completely, as well as the ability to work independently.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data and meet deadlines in pressure situations with constant interruptions, and, at times, conflicting priorities.
Proven ability to research independently the solution to problems, to determine the optimum course of action, and to present options to the team for discussion.
Demonstrated ability to review, comprehend, and interpret complex federal and state regulations as they apply to payroll and employment and apply them correctly.
Must maintain complete confidentiality with all matters discussed and handled in the HRS office.
Minimum Required Experience
Associates degree in Accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, as well as a minimum of 2 years of related experience in a complex payroll environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
