Director of Finance

The Director of Finance for the College of Business (COB) is the chief financial officer for the unit and, as such, has fiduciary responsibilities for all funds allocated to COB, including restricted, designated, and University of Montana (UM) Foundation accounts; all told, COB is about a $7M operation. The Director serves as the liaison between COB and the Office of the Provost, Human Resource Services, Budget Office, the University of Montana Foundation, and other UM administrative offices as needed. The Director often directly supervises, but at minimum oversees the work, for all department administrative support personnel who assist in the areas of fiscal and personnel matters.

The Finance Director independently develops and manages budgets, including planning, assessing, forecasting, consulting, and reporting for COB. The position reports directly to the Director of Academic Budgets and Personnel with a dotted line relationship to the Dean of the College of Business. The Finance Director will work closely with and in response to fiscal planning needs and goals specified by the Dean. The position is accountable to the Director and Dean for all fiscal and personnel procedures of UM and policies of the Montana University System (MUS).

Position Details

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

Salary for this position is $75,000 - $80,000 per year commensurate with qualifications

Minimum Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field

A minimum of five years of administrative experience preferably in an academic environment, including operational leadership responsibilities in a college or comparably complex environment

Outstanding financial expertise; strong technical knowledge and skills; broad and thorough knowledge of budgeting, forecasting and analysis

Effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are necessary

Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting (or equivalent education and work experience), including accounting coursework, and at least three years of job-related experience in office management in a supervisory capacity, with experience in performing accounting functions in a financial management system

Experience with supervising staff

Experience in higher education and working knowledge of UM

Familiarity with Banner and Syntellis Axiom
