Job Description:
General Summary:
The Payroll Supervisor serves as the University's technical Payroll leader by completing timely, accurate, and compliant payrolls for staff and student workers. This position is responsible for all aspects of payroll including providing direction and support to payroll and accounting staff, developing, and implementing payroll processes and internal controls, and training and backfilling payroll staff. The Payroll Supervisor exemplifies an ethic of excellent service to staff and students. In collaboration with Human Resources and the Controller's Office, the Payroll Supervisor communicates important payroll information and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information. Working collaboratively across the University, the Payroll Supervisor works closely with Human Resources, student financial operations, and finance to achieve its objectives. The Payroll Supervisory models the University's mission and values.
Job Duties:
Supervises the Payroll staff by hiring mentoring, coaching, training, developing, and supporting Payroll staff and student workers.
Serves as the payroll system's subject matter expert by maintaining system pay configurations and conducting user acceptance tests of payroll system updates and upgrades.
Manages faculty, staff, and student worker payroll processes by preparing or reviewing information, inputting, or reviewing payroll and benefit data, and loading timesheets to support the processing of payroll.
Analyzes payroll, ensuring discrepancies are researched and resolved prior to finalizing payroll.
Provides excellent customer service, research and resolution, timely and cordial responses that reinforce processes to all staff and student workers.
Implements and enforces internal controls for payroll processes, including evaluating and reviewing SOC 2 internal controls reports.
Maintains, interprets, and implements in processes and systems changes to payroll laws, regulations, and payroll taxes, and garnishment orders.
Oversees the outsourced payroll tax service provider processes and relationship ensuring timely, complete, compliant, and accurate tax payments and filings.
Maintains payroll processes, procedures, and workflow diagrams. Maintains an ethic of continuous process improvement by recommending and implementing improvements to current payroll policies, procedures, and tools.
Prepares all payroll and benefit related general ledger journal entries and supports research and resolution of reconciling differences.
Provides backup to other Payroll Department staff during busy workload periods, vacations, and illnesses.
Prepares routine and ad hoc schedules, analyses, and reports. Prepares and supports audits and tax returns, including the annual financial statement audit, tax returns, and data requests.
Requirements:
Associate degree or college courses in Accounting or Business. Five years of payroll experience can be substituted for education.
Six to eight years work experience effectively processing multiple monthly payrolls and complying with benefit, federal and state payroll taxes and regulations. Two or more years of supervisory experience required.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) strongly preferred
Hybrid remote role. Must reside in Washington state.
Strong customer service abilities with a passion for paying people. Ability to meet critical deadlines and work independently as well as collaboratively. A natural problem-solver.
General understanding of accounting and finance. Demonstrated ability to interpret policies and regulations. Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
Ability to work on an enterprise-wide payroll system and with outside payroll tax service providers. Ability to work with a variety of cloud-based software tools. Intermediate Excel and experience using query tools and report writers.
Advanced Excel and Access skills, SQL exposure and experience with Banner ERP system, a plus.
Additional Information:
Position will remain open until filled.
Salary: $75,000 annually
This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance.
